The Importance of Community Service in the College Community

By: Mr. Harris

Community Service is very important in the college community because students can make a huge impact on their peers, the youth, and most importantly society. Nothing can compare to the peaceful feeling of giving back to the community. In many cases, the rigorous work that comes with the college life can sometimes blind students; making them think that they do not have the time, however, community service is a benefit to the college community. It is a benefit to the college community because it gives students time to get away from the norms of college life, to network, and build relationships. Community service gives the college student a chance to make an impact on the life of a child who might be in need of a positive influence.

Many students do not realize that their one-day in classroom with a minor can change the life of that child forever, especially in the African American community. Many African American children, especially males, are in dyer need of a positive influence. With so much negative energy in their daily environment it is vital that they have someone to look up to that views life in a different light. It is critical that someone attempts to get them to analyze things from another perspective. Every second a college student serves in the community can potentially change or save a life. There are so many ways to give back to the community and believe it or not, the community will give back to you in return. One of the best benefits of community service is networking opportunities. You never who you may meet while serving and most importantly, you never know who you are serving.

  1. I totally agree. This is an area that many students do not participate in and is very valuable in networking, knowledge building and fun.

I did it while in school, coaching little league football and working at the King Center.

Both provided me networking contacts I still use today.

  2. I agree. By participating in community service efforts we become more aware and gain exposure to what is going on in our communities and around the world. We are able to impact and bring to light those unfamiliar, unrepresented and underfunded communities who otherwise may easily be forgotten. If we want to truly fulfill our mission and positively impact the community we must become aware, get involved, and serve our communities

  3. I especially agree with your belief that even what you may perceive to have been a very minute encounter on your end could potentially be very uplifting or life changing for another individual. I feel that, in essence, if we were to invest our time spent dealing with others for the betterment of others, we'd find that both parties would have gained a great deal from the situation

  4. It is revealing a new light that community service is ultimately influential for the immediate community. Certain areas around the country are in need of positive enlightenment, and service is one of the most simple ways of giving back. I do agree with Michelle Obama about many of us may not feel obligated to give back due to our busy lives. It doesn't take much to change a life. Even if time only takes a few minutes to do it.

  5. Great post! Community service is becoming more important as time moves on. Most schools are looking at the amount of service you have completed before admitting you into the school. It is important because young black males, along with females, need that positive person to look up to or to be that guiding light. I need to give back more myself. I plan to become a Big Brother in the next few months. I want to impact a child's life.

  6. Great post! I agree wholeheartedly with you about most college students making excuses as opposed to mobilizing and showing our strength in numbers to contribute to civic engagement. The first thing many of us think of is children when we consider volunteer efforts, but there are many other groups to consider. For example, during my sophomore year I taught an adult literacy class at the Salvation Army. My presence sent the resounding message that people in my age group are thinking about more than sex, drugs, and violence. Howard Thurman said, "Morehouse, do not make God repent for having created you!" As Men of Morehouse an institution that "cultivates leaders with academic superiority, leadership qualities, and moral"; we need to be more willing to expand our already global presence. Moreover, as black educated black men, a dying breed, we can should never stop trying to make a difference in our community! Again, great post!

  7. It is a necessity that college students engage in some sort of community service because not only does it look good on paper but it actually gives you experience in many different things depending on what your doing. As a individual you will grow, and you will make a difference whether it making a difference in someones life or a environment. you will be exposed to many types of people and causes that will expand your mind. Really its always to help out and give back to the community, you would want someone to help you and give back to your community right? Michelle Obama is correct about college students getting involved in our communities its a way to come together and create a better world to live in. It's all positivity.

  8. I completely agree with this post. Community service is a very important aspect of college. Most professionals look for students that participated in service activities when looking over their resumes for jobs. It is vital that we as men of Morehouse understand what it takes to be a well rounded individual. Community service can also build relationships with people that can bring opportunities to you in the future.

  9. I also agree. I can speak from personal experience when I say that community service is both beneficial to the people being served and the person giving the service. Throughout the school year I mentor and tutor. I can not count the amount of people I have met from different schools and different professions that I now keep in contact with. Some of these people have given me recommendations for scholarships or internships based on the community service work I have done. I can also see the huge impact on the children that I help throughout the year. It is truly a fulfilling experience.
