The Evolution of Text Messaging

By Jonathan Hamer

Today in class a large portion of our discussion had to do with how large communication through text messaging has become in the recent history. One thing that we discussed was how business can really benefit and improve production from text messaging.

An example of this is how business can get a large list of phone numbers and send out important text messages informing customers when new products and or services will be released. An article that I read from the Britannica Blog talked about how at one point in time society thought that the invention of telephones and televisions would remove the need for writing as a whole. However, little did they know things such as cell phones increased writing and “text messaging” by an outrageous amount.

  1. I think text messaging has become our new way of talking. Since some people are busy, they feel it is more efficient to send mass texts than to call. however, I believe that texting can sometimes cause people to feel insincere because there is no real personal contact.

  2. Text messaging is the new way of communication. If you cant get in contact with someone a simply text can get there attentino especially if it is importnat. I normally check my text message than checking my voice mail.

  3. I agree with the first comment. There are many languages in the US created by subcultures. They are normally called Jargon. think text messages have their own jargon.

  4. Following the first comment, text messaging has definitely desensitized communication between people. Through the use of Emoji's and words people are expressing our intimate feelings and minimizing our face to face contact. I am almost certain that this has negative implications for relationship building in the future, especially for the youth that are growing up in the heart of this Information Age. I would be interested to see in video similar to the Corning Glass projection video, of what a room full of people will look like in the near future.

  5. Text messaging has truely revolutionized the way we communicate simply because its easy and fast and doesnt require alot to work. I believe text messaging has taken over the way people interact and some what derived from the traditional form of communication especially in business. In business texting should not be a casual conversation but more business related or for sending out updates, meeting info, and etc.

  6. I do feel that text messaging has improved communication substantially making it faster, and safer. However, text messaging has taken the sincerity and human connection away and it is tough to really grasp how the person on the other side of the text is feeling. Also you can put text messages off for later which is a good and bad thing. It create hazards on our roads, and people are so caught up with their phones that they will walk into anything for not paying attention. It lowers are attention to detail. Texting really is for quick conversations or when you need to communicate where being on your phone is not allowed.

  7. Text messaging has really taken off and I agree with most of the above comments. Initially when text messaging began to pick up, I believe that the majority of those who sent text messages where adolescents and people in their early to mid twenties. Over time, however, we have more and more people in older age brackets that are more tech savvy.

  8. I definitely agree that texting has made our lives much easier as it is extremely convenient. However, there are lots of people who now depend on texting as a main source of communication which can interfere with our interpersonal interactions. Texting is both beneficial and crippling at the same time.

    1. I believe texting is extremely beneficial when properly used. For instance, at times I am in a meeting I send a text to effectively communicate what is needed. On the other hand, my friend received a text from a random number which was a job he applied for and missed out on an opportunity. Due to his incorrect verb and grammar usage he now have burnt a bride. Guys be sure to text correctly when you are unsure who is behind the message or who may see it.

  10. Texting is definitely more beneficial because it is so convenient and prevent conversing when unnecessary. Also with evolution of the smart phone and technology you can now email from your phone which is extremely valuable. The con to this is generation of children growing up in this age suffer socially with talking and interacting with people which will hurt them tremendously in the long run.
