Googlevolution

By: Shedric Hobbs

In class, Dr. Oscar Sistrunk constantly mentions the Internet. In fact almost all of our activities and assignments have required us to use the Internet. We use it to check our grades, read our blog posts, and turn in our assignments. One of the most prominent companies on the Internet is Google. Over the last 17 years, Google has many ideas including the search engine, Google+, and coming soon, the Google glasses.

Google Inc.’s first idea was the search engine. Originally named BackRub, this search engine was operated on the Stanford University servers for over a year until it took up too much bandwidth. The name change from BackRub to Google was a play on the word “googol”, which is 1x10100, or 1 and 100 zeroes after. The goal was to seem infinite--having an organized infinite supply of information on the web. According to PC Magazine, “if the Internet was a galaxy, Google became the black hole at its center: all of its information was inevitably sucked in, and the traffic and attention generated a technical sort of gravity, forcing its rivals to react, and, over time, orbit it.”

In June 2011 Google launched a new project, Google+. Google+ was designed as a social networking site. Unlike its predecessors Facebook and Twitter, Google+ is made to share information with specific groups of people and not necessarily everyone. According to Earth Android, Google+ has 170 million users in its ten months of existence.

Coming soon to America, Google will release the Google Glasses. Some of the features include a camera, a schedule, and navigation. These glasses also allow you to find who else is near you at any time. They also cost over $1000, so a person who wants the glasses should start saving.

Google has in many ways impacted our lives. Over 70 percent of consumers use Google as a search engine according to Brafton.com. Google+ users are also growing at a fast rate of 17 million users per month. The Google Glasses are set to revolutionize technology, if a person can afford them. Google has had a strong presence in society and plans to remain around for years to come.

  1. I agree Google is responsible for a lot of technological advances that we enjoy today. I just read that the Google smart car Professor Sistrunk was telling us about is street legal in Nevada.

  2. I have been very impressed with the innovation and products that google has provided but I'm sure if I'm excited about these glasses. I may be old fashion but I just think it's going to contribute to laziness, making simple tasks even more simple. But people will always pay for the latest technology so we'll see how this goes when it comes out.

  3. I am impressed with google, its innovation, and its products. However, googles tragic flaw is the fact that it uses gmail accounts to view others' location, internet browser, etc.

  4. Google is definitely a powerhouse company when it comes to innovation and evolution. Google has uncertainly impacted everyone's lives and this number will only grow from here.

  5. Google is showing itself to be a technological company on the rise. I am glad they continue to find new ways to be innovative while still marketing their same great brand and product. Their name has become ubiquitious with excellence in searching.

  6. Google continues to impress me more with each of its lastest offerings. Professor Sistrunk had mentioned Google Hangout (www.google.com/+/learnmore/hangouts/) today in class. I been looking for a free platform to host video conferences for group projects and Google Hangout offers the perfect solution.

  7. Google truly is an extraordinary company. One of the reason's I believe that they are so successful is because that they have mastered the art of innovation. They have also done what most companies strive to do with their respective product and that is to continually answer questions and solve the problems of everyday life. By doing this they remain not only relevant but on the forefront of the technology industry. One other amazing thing Google does is keep a sense of humor. Every year they do an April fools joke. It usually is of something extravagant that they say is their next innovation. The Google glasses was one of those pranks.

  8. This is an authentic post. Google has been emerging vastly, especially within the past 5 years. Google has been displaying consistent innovation actions in a myriad of ways within their services. Google has become one of the most efficient and productive company in our global economy today.

  9. I like the fact that Google is expanding. Google+ and the purchase of Youtube in 2006 were all major expansions to an already big-time company. The only problem I see them having; is while looking to expand, they failed to improve the very thing that made Google successful: the search engine. Bing has a commercial running that has the public comparing their Bing search engine versus Google's. In the commercial, consumers are choosing Bing over Google at a 2:1 ratio. I personally don't have a preference, but looking at it from a business stand point it doesn't look good when Google is being beat out at it's own technology.

  10. Google is steadily expanding at a fast pace. Eventually I think google going to have some connection to anything and everything. Google is not just trying to be a powerhouse, they are creeping on the verge of the next monopoly.
