Power of Excel

BY: Philip Prevost
As we draw near the end of our time in Professor Sistrunk’s MIS course; we have begun to see the importance and capabilities of Microsoft Excel.  However we have only scratched the surface of such an amazing computer software.  Excel has been designed to fit employers and employees with crucial information.  Microsoft Excel has become a growing necessity for companies in the workforce when it comes to recruiting employees.

Employers look for individual’s competent in Excel due to the fact that it has practically become a part of their day-to-day operations on every level.  For example, the program allows individuals to create charts or graphs, make decisions based on future calculations, import data from the Internet, calculate percentages, maintain inventory, plot trends and creating concept maps by sequentially ranking information of importance.  This program is flexible in accommodating companies on all levels of work.  Excel provides enormous amounts of space for customization as it may pertain to a particular company’s need or want.  Excel has become a favorite for many organizations in doing business.  It is only justifiable that an individual be knowledgeable of Excel in this day and age.
In the information age, data is everywhere and it’s up to us to make sense of it all.  The computer software is now being used in almost all professions of work.  The program is not only used in business but also in everyday life.  You may want to customize the program to calculate your debt to asset ratio, sales tax of a purchase or even the temperature changes outside.  The possibilities are endless with Excel.

  1. I agree with the statement of employers looking for prospects who understand Excel. Many of the Morehouse alumni that come back to speak say the same thing. They say that other schools have a head-start on Morehouse because we don't put enough emphasis on teaching computer literacy. Most of us are only familiar with Microsoft Word and Powerpoint but what we're learning in class, is that Excel is much more useful in the business world. The possible uses for Excel truly are endless.

  2. The way that Excel has found a way to benefit businesses of all types is truely amazing. I can't think of a work experience (with the exception of being a dishwasher ) that I have had of which having a familiarity in the use of Excel didn't find itself handy. The only qualms that I have with the software is that it is not standardized for different operating systems. Excel on a OSX operating system is meaningfully different than that for a Windows operating system. This, to me, is senseless. Also, the new generations/evolutions of the product often times have such changes that it leaves those who could be considered Excel professionals, confused and resistant to updating their large businesses with the newest Excel software. Other than those problems I agree with Philip in the fact that it is necessary for many employees to understand Excel because it is such a integral part of modern day business and operations.

  4. Excel is might be the single most important computer software program used in the workplace today. That's why so many workers and prospective employees are required to learn Excel. From the viewpoint of the employer, particularly those in the field of information systems, the use of Excel as an end-user computing tool is essential. Not only are many businesses using Excel to perform everyday functional tasks in the workplace, but also an increasing number of employers rely on Excel to make important decisions regarding the business.

  5. I agree with this post. It is no doubt extremely important to have a general understanding of excel for any job because things always must be organized. Excel represents an awesome avenue to organize data into easily readable terms. As I continue my journey through this class, I have become equipped with more excel tools.

  6. Rxcel has been a big help this class. I think I will enjoy using it this summer during my internship. Our school should have a class that focuses strictly on Excel.

  8. I recently did a workshop and we didn't use the mouse to navigate through excel. It is very important that we understand the multiple capabilities that excel has. It will make us more dynamic as a employee for whatever company we choose to work for.

  9. I agree with your post 100 percent. Excel has become the voice of business for our generation. Without a knowledge in Excel a person is considered to be stuck in the stone age. Jobs do not want to hire anyone who is that far back in the current wave of technology. The craziest part of this new wave is to think about how hard things used to be before things such as the computer and Excel were invented. A lot of time and labor were saved by the creation and advancement of Excel.

  10. I agree, every company or business wants their employees to be fluent with their excel skills. statistics, accounting and many other career areas rely on information to be organized. formulas, templates, and just the overall versatility of excel makes it a one of a kind program. If a person does not know how to properly work excel then they are at a disadvantage when it comes to competing for jobs.

  12. The power of excel is very useful. In many businesses you need charts, comparative analysis and easy viewing tables. Excel provides users with the power to create tables and list that benefit business departments such as sales and revenue that need to be recorded.

  13. I didn't fully understand the extent to which Excel could help businesses until I spent some time with professionals who begin their day opening varying spreadsheets and keep 10-15 different spreadsheets open at all time throughout the day. Complex programs can be built into Excel and data can be pulled from Bloomberg terminals as well as proprietary company systems to build analytic tools. For people who plan on going into analytic roles after graduation, it's definitely worth it to get extremely familiar with Excel and at least moderately familiar with the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming language.

  14. Without this class, I'll be clueless when it comes to using excel. As I been applying for jobs for graduation, I have notice that most of the companies that I'm applying for list excel as a general requirement. I will continue to expand my knowledge of excel through watching YouTube tutorials and online guides well after this class is over.
