Education

by Elijah Thompson

Socrates says that a life unexamined is not worth living. It very important to think critically about the decisions you make and examine your life from a bird's eye view. I have found a very interesting documentary on college and the financial strain, that truly perplexed me. The facts told a story, that I almost didn't want to except.

The documentary points out flaws in our education system and the burden four years of college tuition can place on you. It also highlights scandals within our education system which will lead to destruction.
Alarming Facts:
  • Federal Law requires college tuition to increase!
  • Credit Card Debt no longer is the greatest debt plague: student loans lead all debt!
  • Most colleges and publishers have written agreements to eliminate the used textbook market.
  • The easy lending practices by the federal reserve that lead to the real estate bubble are being utilized in the college lending process.
  • It is easier to get a $100,000 student loan than it is to get a $10,000 car loan!
  • The debt bubble will burst putting the lenders on their back and spreading to the rest of the country and creating a recession yet again.
  • Due to technology education cost should be decreasing!
  • The government has taken over the student loan business.
This is not to say that a college education is not important because it is by far one of the most important entities of your life. Education is the only way we as a people can innovate and move forward. The intangibles a college education will teach you set someone miles apart from someone who did not attend college or invest in higher learning. This is in fact a calling to be more diligent and take advantage of the opportunity that you have at Morehouse. There are many opportunities to get a scholarships, internships and become an expert at you field but a lot of times it seems student are reluctant to come to class. The last thing anyone wants if for you to graduate from Morehouse with a mountain of debt and no job. I also find it so important that black individuals become more subconscious about debt and spending habits due to our overall lack of wealth as a culture. We have all made the decision to go to college and I believe it was one of the best decisions we have made. I intend to further my education in graduate school due to the access to expert knowledge, but I would like us all to live a self examined life.
In class we spoke about budgeting, managing finances, and the high cost of school. This goes farther in depth about the struggles the next generation will face.

  2. I think it's sad that financial aid isn't available for our generation. Especially, Morehouse students witnessing some of our friends leaving Morehouse because of not having enough financial aid to stay in school.

  3. Scholarships are not guaranteed to anyone. The chances of actually seeing that money is perhaps relative to winning the lotto. The thought of college students accumulating so much debt before graduation has become a reality in society. It is very important that prior to college we budget and watch our money very carefully. It will be worth it in the end. Because as we know, instant gratification wont see you to the end.

  4. Schooling has gotten so expensive it has deterred students from achieving degrees and as for others completely dissolved their chances. It is very hard to get back on course when one is knocked off, and I feel the increase of tuition is doing that to students worldwide. At the rate we are going eventually the rich will contain all the knowledge of the world and the middle class will have to settle for what the upper class decides to let us learn about.

  5. The cost continue to rise here at Morehouse every year and its unfortunate that students that want to learn and get grades are mot getting financial aid. I think a system needs to be in place for more financial aid.

  6. I found the documentary to be extremely alarming. Education is a huge money maker. It's sad to hear how individuals have exploited education as a means to capitalize off the debts of others.
