The new licensing deals with social media websites are increasing the publishing income that can be collected for writers, producers, artist, and record labels. The license with YouTube not only allows publishers to collect royalties for the song to be streamed. This license has also opened for Performance Royalties to be generated from YouTube videos as well. Companies will also have to pay the publishers, writers, producers, and record labels for their advertisements to be played along with the composition. Music Publishers are able to collect royalties for any video that has their composition playing (home-videos, fan videos, dance classes, artist covers).

If record labels release music for free a lot of changes will occur in the entertainment industry. A lot of companies will fight to lower the statutory rates for the music royalties. T.V production, Advertisement, Online Streaming companies will expect for artist to allow their music to be streamed for free if they're releasing their music to the public for free. Mechanical and Performance royalties are the only publishing revenues that would be collected if music was free, which is not enough income to sustain a publishing company or a record label . Music being placed in t.v & films has become an Jackpot for marketing music and generating royalties for artist, producers, and writers. T.V & Film companies PayOut (a one time fee) writers and producers to dodge paying royalties for the use of music in movies and television shows. T.V & Film companies will also deduct the PayOut rates that they pay writers and producers if music is released to the public for free.

B.Young Entertainment is my music publishing company ran out of Atlanta. Understanding different royalties that can be collected from one song; makes it hard for me to agree with releasing music to the public for free. The battle that record labels and publishing companies go through to get companies (Youtube, VeVo, Pandora) to sign licence agreements, which makes it hard to believe that labels will release music for free.

I've attached a picture of my Music Publishing Company that I would like to attache to my blog post. Also, I've pasted a couple of license companies that I talk about in my blog post.

  1. I agree. The music industry is a profession. Just like any other profession you expect to get paid for your time and work.

  2. As Philip said above, the music industry is a career that some people take and they need to earn an income like everyone else. With the development of technology, it has become easier to download music illegally, thus diminishing the amount of income that an artist can earn. Technology has also had a positive effect on the music industry as there are more distribution channels for music to be given to consumers (youtube, pandora, etc.) and they can make revenue through these streams even if a consumer doesn't buy an album.
